GST calculator: add or remove 10% GST

Quick answer

To add GST, multiply the price by 1.1, so $100 plus GST is $110 with $10 of GST. To find the GST already inside a total, divide the total by 11, so $110 includes $10 of GST. GST in Australia is a flat 10% on most goods and services. Use the calculator below for any amount.

If you are registered for GST you charge it on your taxable sales and claim credits on the GST you pay on business purchases, then report the net on your BAS. Frequently asked questions

How do I add GST to a price?

Multiply the GST-exclusive price by 1.1. For example, $100 plus GST is $110, and the GST portion is $10.

How do I work out the GST included in a total?

Divide the GST-inclusive total by 11. For example, $110 includes $10 of GST, because 110 divided by 11 is 10.

What is the GST rate in Australia?

GST is a flat 10% on most goods and services. Some supplies are GST-free, such as most basic food and many health and education services.

Do I have to charge GST?

You must register for and charge GST once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 ($150,000 for non-profits), or if you provide taxi or rideshare services. Below that it is optional.

What services are GST-free in Australia?

GST-free (sometimes called exempt) supplies include most health and medical services, most education, basic food, childcare and exports. You do not charge GST on them, but you can still claim GST credits on your business costs. That is different from input-taxed supplies, such as residential rent and most financial services, where you charge no GST and cannot claim credits either.

I am a contractor and a practice charges me a service fee with 10% GST. What do I do?

If you are registered for GST, you claim that 10% back as an input tax credit on your activity statement, even if your own client services are GST-free, because GST-free supplies are still creditable. If you are not registered, that GST is a dead cost, so for many allied health and medical contractors it is worth registering for GST to reclaim the service fee and other business GST, with no GST added to your clients. See our guide to GST and service fees for health practitioners.
