What a valid Australian tax invoice must show

For a taxable sale of more than $82.50 including GST, the ATO requires a tax invoice to include these details. This generator includes all of them.

The seven details a valid Australian tax invoice must show: the words Tax invoice, the seller's identity and ABN, the issue date, a description of the items with quantity and price, the GST amount or a statement that the total includes GST, and for sales of $1,000 or more the buyer's identity or ABN.

Your ABNAll tax invoices

A brief description of each item, with quantity and priceAll tax invoices
The GST amount, or a statement that the total price includes GSTAll tax invoices
The buyer's identity or ABNSales of $1,000 or more

If you are not registered for GST, switch the GST toggle off. The heading changes to a plain “Invoice”, because only businesses registered for GST should issue a tax invoice.

Do you need to charge GST?

You must register for and charge GST once your business reaches a GST turnover of $75,000 or more ($150,000 for non-profits), or if you drive taxis or rideshare. Below that threshold it is optional. If you are not registered, do not add GST and issue a regular invoice instead. Our GST basics and the BAS lodgement page explain how GST flows through to your activity statement.

How to use this invoice generator

  1. Add your business details. Enter your business name, ABN, address and logo. Tick “remember” and they will be saved on your device for next time.
  2. Add the client and invoice details. Enter who you are billing, an invoice number and the issue and due dates.
  3. Add your line items. List each product or service with quantity and unit price. Turn GST on to add 10%.
  4. Download or print. Click Download / Print PDF and choose “Save as PDF”. Only the invoice prints, not the page around it.

GST is a flat 10%. This page is general information, not financial or tax advice. No. Everything happens in your browser. You can choose to remember your own business details locally on your device, but nothing is uploaded to True Tally or anyone else.

How do I save the invoice as a PDF?

Click Download / Print PDF and choose “Save as PDF” as the destination. The on-screen controls are hidden automatically, so only the invoice is saved or printed.
